Today we started out the morning working on our projects for the last time. Tomorrow we will show off our hard work, and present them to the students of the exchange. Once morning project time was done, we had lunch and then were off to more Finnish classes. This time, the classes included home economics (Foods Class), art and physical education. When the day was done, we all met up at the school amphitheatre for two movies to finish off the night. We watched The Nightmare on Elm Street and Mamma Mia. Day five was completed with popcorn, pool games, and fun.
Happy Birthday, Nick! Katsoimme The Nightmare on Elm Street ja Mamma Mia. Päivä viisi täydentyi popkornilla, biljardilla sekä hauskanpidolla. Time for a field trip! On Wednesday morning we went for a small tour of the Russian border. We learned various facts and were given multiple demonstrations. The student's highlights were the dog demonstration, which featured a trained border control dog finding hidden substances in a car, an x-ray demonstration where they could see cigarettes in a car tire, and learning about the precautions taken when entering and exiting Finland and Russia. After the border tour, we spent the afternoon in Joensuu where we shopped until we dropped. Students were able to find many Finland specialties, such as Moomin mugs (a cup that features a story character from Finland children's books. Many families have these mugs in their homes), and Karl Fazer chocolate, a brand only found in Finland. The night ended back in Kitee, where we hung out at Jenna's house playing games and enjoying everyone's company.
Happy Birthday, Nick! Aika opintomatkalle! Keskiviikko aamuna menimme pienelle kierrokselle Venäjän rajalle. Me opimme monia faktoja ja esimerkkejä. Opiskelijat löysivät erilaisia suomalaisia tuotteita, kuten Muumimukeja (kuppi, missä on kuvia suomalaisista lastenkirjojen hahmoista, eli muumeista), Karl Fazerin suklaata, mitä löytyy vain Suomesta. Illalla menimme takaisin KIteelle, missä vietimme aikaa Jennan kotona, pelaten pelejä sekä nauttien kaikkien seurasta. We started out our second day of school spending time on the projects. After lunch, we continued going to Finnish classes. The Canadians learned about relationships between organisms in bio class, as well as other skills in physics, chemistry and english. Following school, all the students went to different parts of Kitee to spend their time. Along with going for food, students went to the gym, multiple cafes, or back to their homes. Once all the free time was over, all of us met up at a place called Riihijärven Matkaparkki, where Mijia had rented a house for us to stay in for the evening. We played volleyball, ate food, and held many games of pingpong. The night ended with taking turns in the sauna, and jumping in the freezing cold lake just outside the house.
Happy Birthday, Nick! The day started out with an early morning wake up for the Canadians. The school in Kitee welcomed us with open doors, and warm smiles. Students were given a variety of different classes to attend with the Finns, including chemistry, english, physics, and biology. The morning was spent learning, sometimes in Finnish, English or both. Once the first classes had been completed, the Canadians had their first lunch in the school cafeteria. Opinions varied, but over all the (free) food was definitely appreciated. After the lunch was over, it was project time! All of the groups of four were given the opportunity to choose the topic of their project. The topics include food and drink, symbolism, and music, just to name a few. Each of the projects will discuss the differences and similarities of Canadian and Finnish culture. School ended at 3:00, and each of us spent our afternoons differently. The day ended with some students first Finnish sauna (It was HOT!), some went to a nearby town called Joensuu to explore, and others relaxed and just enjoyed spending time together.
Happy Birthday, Nick! Once all the Canadians had a chance to catch up on sleep, we enjoyed our first morning in Finland. Around noon, most of us met up at a castle in the town "Savonlinna", located about an hour away from Kitee. We spent our morning enjoying a history tour in the Olavinlinna castle, which was built in 1475. Once the tour was completed, we went our separate ways to take in the beautiful Savonlinna scenery. Savonlinna has many cobble roads, and an amazing view of the the lake Saimaa. After, we made our way back to our Finnish homes. We each spent our afternoons differently, either going to cafes for lunch, or spending time together back in Kitee. Tomorrow will be the Canadian's first day at the Finnish school!
Happy Birthday, Nick! Kun kaikki kanadalaiset olivat saaneet tilaisuuden nukkua, he aloittivat ensimmäisen aamunsa Suomessa. Päivällä suurin osa tapasi toisensa Savonlinnassa. Iltapäivä vietettiin opastetulla kierroksella Olavinlinnassa, joka on rakennettu vuonna 1475. Kierroksen päätyttyä, jakauduttiin eri reiteille katselemaan kaunista Savonlinnaa ja sitten lähdettiin takaisin suomalaisiin koteihin. Ilta vietettiin eri tavoin, kuten käymällä kahviloissa lounaalla tai viettämällä aikaa yhdessä Kiteellä. Huominen tulee olemaan kanadalaisten ensimmäinen päivä suomalaisessa koulussa! The Canadian students left for their Finnish adventure at 9:00 on Friday, the 20th. The 26 hour journey began with the drive to Calgary, where we boarded the 8 hour plane ride that would take us to Amsterdam. From there, the very tired Canadians flew to Helsinki where the train was waiting to take us to our Finns. After we arrived at Kitee, each of us went home with our Finnish families for a much-needed sleep. The adventure continues tomorrow!
Happy Birthday, Nick! Kanadan opiskelijat lähtivät seikkailulleen Suomeen perjantaina 20. lokakuuta kello 9 paikallista aikaa. 26:n tunnin matka alkoi ajomatkalla Calgaryyn, mistä he jatkoivat kahdeksan tunnin lennolla Amsterdamiin. Sieltä hyvin väsyneet kanadalaiset lensivät Helsinkiin, jossa juna oli valmiina viemään heidät Kiteelle suomalaistensa luokse. Saavuttuaan määränpäähänsä, he lähtivät isäntäperheidensä koteihin kauan kaivatuille unille. Seikkailu jatkuu huomenna! We can hardly believe that it's already Thursday! This week has been so much fun, and today was no exception. We started the day off at the Frank Slide again, and everyone worked hard to ready their presentations. Classes ran as usual in the afternoon, spanning from foods and cosmetology, to physics and chemistry. The school day ended with a ... RAP BATTLE. The grade 12 30-1 Social Studies class allowed our group to watch their rap performances, and we were all speechless. It was hilariously amazing! After school, we introduced our exchange students to the glorious wonder of poutine. They thought it was interesting... to say the least. The day was concluded with a potluck dinner, movie, hanging out, and of course, Tim Hortons.
Happy Birthday, Nick! Me emme pysty uskomaan, että on jo torstai! Viikko on mennyt niin nopeasti sisältäen paljon hauskuutta. Eikä tämä päivä ollut poikkeus. Me aloitimme päivän Frank Slidilta taas ja kaikki työskentelivät ahkerasti saadakseen projektit valmiiksi. Iltapäivä kului jälleen oppitunneilla, aina ruuasta ja kosmetologiasta fysiikkaan ja kemiaan. Koulupäivä päättyi eeppiseen RAP BATTLEEN. Vuosiluokka 12 30-1 Social Studies (yhteiskuntaopin tunti) päästivät meidät katsomaan heidän rap esityksiään ja me kaikki olimme sanattomia. Päivä päättyi nyyttäreihin, elokuvaan She's the man, hengailuun ja tietysti Tim Hortonsiin. The day started off at the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre with us working on our projects. There are eight groups researching topics about immigration, labour and union, the Hillcrest Mine Disaster, or entrepreneurship. These groups and topics are based on a requested focus from the Kitee school, local programs developed by the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre, and our own Crowsnest locality. After working at the centre, we headed back to the school for lunch and classes. The Finnish students then enjoyed a game of badminton in the gym, and let their competitive nature shine. After school, students hung out with friends and family and did many different things. From hiking miner's path, to visiting Crockets, to just hanging out, the afternoon was a blast. Later in the evening, most of our group went out for 'wing night' at Pure Country, and many of the Fins tried them for the first time. One of the highlights of the night was the order of "Suicide Wings," that ended up being hotter than the surface of the sun. Nick enjoyed the third night of his birthday, and even ended up getting free cake out of it. The night was filled with friends, pool, memories, and good times.
Happy Birthday, Nick! The day started off at the Crowsnest Museum with a guided tour of downtown Coleman and exploring local history. We were also given our project assignments this morning and had the opportunity to discuss with our new groups. After an eventful morning full of planning, tours, artifacts, and maple syrup candies, we headed back to the school for lunch. The afternoon was packed with classes and once again trying to fit all of us around one table in the Learning Commons. After school, we all got ready for a true Canadian campfire experience, and met at Allison Lake. We sat around the campfire, enjoying the cool mountain air, while cooking hotdogs, bannock, and smores. For many of our Finnish friends, this was their first time eating smores. Juho's comment basically sums up their reaction, "This was probably my first and last smore, ever." We also went on a beautiful hike to the frozen lake, while snowball fights sprang up sporadically. This wonderful night ended with hot chocolate and once again singing happy birthday to Nick.
Happy Birthday, Nick! Aamulla menimme Croswnest Museoon, jossa tutustuimme paikalliseen historiaan. Lounaan jälkeen iltapäivä kului kanadalaisten omilla tunneilla ja yritimme jälleen sopia syömään yhden pöydän ääreen. Illalla menimme koko porukka Allison järvelle kokemaan kanadalaisen leirinuotion. The day began at the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre and was jam-packed with tours, movies, and learning about what happened in Frank in 1903. After learning about the Frank Slide, we went on a guided hike through the vast sea of rocks, exploring and having a great time with our new friends! A bit more exploring and a trip to the gift shop concluded our morning adventure. With great excitement we then took the bus back to the school to introduce our exchange students to the Canadian education system. From chemistry and physics, to cosmetology and fitness, everyone seemed to have a great time (especially trying to cram us all around one table for lunch!). In the evening we all went over to Nick's to play board games, talk, and of course, eat. The weather also decided that the Fins needed to experience a "Canadian Winter," so currently the landscape is white with snow as it continues to come down! Happy Birthday, Nick!
Today most of the group drove over to Fernie with little to no plan and were ready to greet whatever adventures awaited them! We walked down Main Street, stopped at many shops, and enjoyed the gorgeous views. Afterward, we went to the Fernie Lodge to take pictures and explore one of the most famous ski resorts in Canada. Next, we split up into two groups. One of the groups went for the "the best ice cream ever" and the other group went to the Fernie Aquatic Centre to swim. The Finnish students didn't seem to approve of the "sauna" that was at the pool. Finally, those who had not already gone home stopped for dinner at Boston Pizza.
Happy Birthday, Nick! Sunnuntaina suurin osa ryhmästä suuntasi Fernieen tietämättä, mitä päivä tuo tullessaan. Kävelimme ympäri Fernietä ja pysähdyimme monissa eri kaupoissa ja nautimme kauniista maisemista. Kävimme ottamassa kuvia Fernien laskettelukeskuksessa, mikä on todella tunnettu Kanadassa. The Fins arrived yesterday but were extremely jet lagged and needed sleep, so today is the day that we really got to know each other and we really got to explore Canada. We divided up into small groups and took our new friends to all kinds of places such as hockey games, coal mines, the Calgary Tower, malls, and on nice walks around the town, just to name a few! Today alone was an amazing experience and I personally, cannot wait to see what the next week holds!
Happy Birthday, Nick! The Finnish students departed from Finland to begin their 26 hour journey to Canada on Thursday at 11:00 pm. They have now landed and are headed to the school! Excitement is brewing amongst the Canadian and Finnish students, as well as our parents and teachers! We can't wait for our Canadian adventures to begin!
